In the United States 81% of fire related deaths occur in residences. Residential property loss from fire in 2007 was a staggering $7,546,000,000.
Fire departments are not staffed, and don’t have the budgets, to perform home fire safety inspections, nor is that their mission. To fill this void in fire prevention and safety, this inspection focuses on the steps and mechanics of conducting a thorough home fire safety inspection, and the use of NIFAST’s R1 fire safety Guidelines. The inspection also shows what homeowners and occupants can and should do on their own to enhance their homes fire safety.
Each year in the U.S. 3,000 lives are lost in fires, and approximately 12,000 people suffer serious burn injuries. Operational smoke alarms are found present in only 23% of fires. Ninety percent of burns in the home occur in the kitchen; 66% of these injuries involve arm and hand burns.
